iPhone users in India can now tap their phones to pay in stores. This ends years of waiting for Apple Pay in India. The official launch date was September 30, 2026.
This is a big step for Apple in a fast-growing market. The new service lets millions of local users pay easily without cash or plastic cards. All you need is the Apple Wallet app on your phone.
Axis Bank Takes the Lead on Apple Pay Integration
The initial launch centers around a strategic Axis Bank Apple Pay alliance. Axis Bank is the first bank in India to work with Apple Pay. If you have an Axis Bank Visa or Mastercard credit card, you can add it to your Apple Wallet today.
You can now pay in stores with a quick tap of your phone. You can also pay on websites and in apps. You do not need a physical card, a PIN, or a text code to shop. You just use Face ID, Touch ID, or your phone passcode to pay.
Apple works with big payment systems like Pine Labs, Razorpay, Paytm, and PayU. Because of this, you can use Apple Pay at millions of store counters. You can also use it on popular apps like Zomato, Blinkit, and Croma.

Clarifying the Apple Pay India UPI Support Question
Despite heavy speculation prior to launch, there is currently no direct Apple Pay India UPI support. Right now, the service only works with credit cards and does not link to India's main payment network.
Cards Only: The app uses credit card networks for payments. You still need other apps to send money using bank accounts.
No RuPay or Debit: Debit cards and RuPay cards do not work yet. Only Visa and Mastercard credit cards from Axis Bank work right now.
More Banks Coming: Apple has talked with HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank, but no new deals are ready yet.
By using simple tap-to-pay tech, Apple is aiming at credit card users who want fast, safe, and private payments instead of scanning QR codes.

What Apple's Entry Means for Indian Fintech
Apple Pay India gives iPhone users a new way to buy things. Most people in the country use bank apps for small daily payments. Apple Pay focuses on fast credit card payments instead.
More banks will join the service soon. As more cards start to work, Apple Pay India could change how people pay at store counters, buy apps, and shop online.
